THATTEKAD BIRD SANCTUARY

Thattekkad is one of the two bird sanctuaries in Kerala. Situated in Ernakulam district, this PA is a feast to the eyes and music to the ears. Several species of birds found in South India are seen here. The famous ornithologist, Dr. Salim Ali, was the architect of this sanctuary. He reported 167 birds during the Travancore-Cochin Bird Survey. The Bombay Natural History Society had identified 253 species of birds in Thattekkad. Spread over an extent of 25.16 sq. km, Thattekkad attracts nature lovers from far and wide. Best season: August to May.

The Day Trek (1 day).

On arrival at Thattekkad by 7 am, our naturalist and guides will lead you into the jungle for a day’s trip. 1^st session is a two hours birding trek which will end with breakfast. 2^nd phase of trekking starts after breakfast by 10 am and will last up to 6 hrs. You will be crossing the boundaries of the Park with your team. Chances of seeing wildlife and endemic birds are high. Packed lunch will be provided en-route. Trek ends at Kuttampuzha by 4 pm.

Tariff: INR 5, 000/- for two pax .

River-side Camping (1Night, 2 days).

Day 1: On arrival in the morning, trek through the teak plantations and semi-evergreen forests of Thattekkad with your naturalist and guides. A one hour trek will lead you to a small island on the banks of River Periyar, where you will be camping tonight in a small cottage made on stilts or in alpine/dome tents. Move around the camp with your naturalist while your hosts cook lunch for you. Your camp site is an ideal location for wildlife watching also. Evenings could be noisy with the chirping of birds. Spend overnight at camp.

Day 2: Wake up early morning and do some birding. After breakfast, trek back to the main gate of Thattekkad Bird sanctuary.

Tariff: INR 8, 000/- for two pax on twin sharing basis.

Thattekkad Birding Trail  (2 Nights and 3 days).

A tour through the famous Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, to explore its birdlife in the company of our ornithologist. In this two nights and three days trip, we assure you sighting of at least 100 species of birds in Nov-Jan and 60 species during other months (including common birds). Some rare endemic birds of Western Ghats are found in this sanctuary.

Day 1: On arrival (preferably by 7 am), check-in to a home stay on the boundaries of the Park. Your naturalist will guide you through the nearby plantations and forest areas for birding and back to the home stay by afternoon. After lunch and siesta, visit some wetlands and plantations for further birding. You will be back in the home stay by late evening. Discussions over dinner and overnight stay at home stay.

Day 2: Wake up early in the morning and trek through the teak plantations and semi-evergreen forests of the sanctuary with your naturalist. Back to the home stay for breakfast. Check out and trek through the jungle to a watch tower in the middle of the jungle for this day’s camp. The surrounding semi-evergreen and evergreen forest patches, wetlands and lagoons makes this one of the best places for birding. During night, listen to the calls of the nocturnal birds, your naturalist will identify them for you.  All meals will be cooked and served at camp by your hosts.

Day 3:Chirping birds will wake you up in the early morning hours. After breakfast, walk back to the main gate of the Park where the tour ends.
